As part of completing their Community Payback hours in 2014/15, 53 service users have completed a City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Horticultural Skills. The course has been running for seven years, delivered by Mark Skelding, a tutor from Solihull College, on site at Fircroft College in partnership with SWM CRC. More details about the course are given in this video – https://vimeo.com/106582403.
The service users were presented with their certificates at a special ceremony at Fircroft College by Simon Lomas, Head of Community Payback, Lindsay Stewart, Vice Principal of Solihull College and Richard Przrodski, Marketing Manager at Fircroft College.
As a result of obtaining this qualification some service users have gone on to start their own horticulture business, while others have gone on to further study.
Simon Lomas said,
Having the opportunity to obtain a qualification while working on CP is the ideal way for people to get some training and a qualification. Due to the success we have had in partnership with Fircroft College and Solihull College we have expanded this approach to other areas so CP workers in Perry Barr, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley and Wolverhampton will soon have the same opportunity. We are looking to build up provision so that all CP workers will in the future be able to leave CP with a qualification, certificate, reference, CV or job interview preparation.
Well done to ETE (Education, Training and Employment) for coordinating a successful partnership!
